About EASECs
The idea of holding the EASEC conference was conceived m the
early eighties al the Asian Institute of Technology. Bangkok.
Thailand The first two conferences. EASEC-1 and EASEC-2 were
held in Bangkok in 1986 and Chiengmai. Thailand m 1989.
EASEC-3 was organized by Tongji University and held in Shanghai,
China in 1991 In September 1993. Seoul National University of
Korea served as a host for EASEC-4. Griffith University hosted the
fifth conference. EASEC-5. at Gold Coast. Australia in July 1995
EASEC-6. organized by the National Taiwan University, was held in
Taipei in January 1998. The most recent conference EASEC-7 was
held in Kochi University of Technology in Japan in August 1999.
Conference Theme
Challenges in the 21st Century
Economic growth goes hand in hand with infrastructure
development. Even though the East Asia-Pacific region has been
growing remarkably in the last decades, its growth potential is
expected to generate even more economic and infrastructure
development in the new millennium. At the same lime. with the
increasing awareness of the limited availability of resources and the
fragility of the environment, structural and construction engineers
have to examine more carefully [he impact of these considerations
on Infrastructure construction.
Information Technology (IT) is revolutionising how things are done
and the pace of development in this field is expected lo increase
exponentially The effect of IT is another of the many new
challenges that the engineering and construction engineers will face
in the new millennium.
EASEC-8. like the past EASEC conferences, will continue to provide
the opportunity for structural and construction engineers to share
and exchange knowledge on new discoveries and problem-solving.
It is also to promote better co-operation and mutual understanding
so that new challenges in the 21st century can be taken on
together
by all concerned.
